Australia s Agora Android phone to ship worldwide in January

The world s second Android phone, the Agora, is on the way from Australian-based Kogan, and the device -- which features a full QWERTY keyboard -- will be available globally early next year.

Australia-based Kogan Technologies is now accepting pre-orders for the Agora mobile phone -- the second Android phone after HTC s G1 -- with worldwide shipments to start on January 29, 2009.

The Kogan Agora will work on networks around the world, and is not restricted to customers in Australia and New Zealand, according to information posted on Kogan s Web site.

In contrast to HTC s G1, which is being sold by T-Mobile and Wal-Mart in the US, the Agora is equipped with a full QWERTY keyboard.

Other specifications include a 2.5-inch, 320-by-240 touch screen; FM radio; Bluetooth 2.0 with Enhanced Data Rate; a microSD slot for memory expansion; and a customizable home screen with instant e-mail, text message, and IM notifications. An Agora Pro model adds Wi-Fi, GPS, and a 2 Mp camera.

Priced at the US equivalents of about 225 for the Agora and 295 for the Agora Pro, the phones are being sold unlocked and without SIM cards. US and other international customers must pay additional shipping charges which are figured in at checkout on Kogan s Web site .

So which is it? Last week, the candle in Carl Icahn s window appeared lit, while Steve Ballmer s was snuffed out. This week, after Icahn put out his candle publicly on nationwide TV, Ballmer appears to have lit his again.

In an exchange of semi-counter-proposals that has seen more flip-flops than a 2004 Republican campaign rally, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer made it clear this morning through his mouthpiece of choice, The Wall Street Journal, that his company may be interested after all in a deal with the search engine component of Yahoo.

The comment comes a few days after investor Carl Icahn, who at one time was seen to be the man who could finally put a Microsoft Yahoo deal together, told CNBC he was against any sale of a portion of Yahoo to anyone at all. Icahn specifically cited AOL as one example, though Microsoft was presumably a member of anyone. As his reason, Icahn said he believed Yahoo s shares were currently undervalued.

Icahn did say he had discussed, or had been open, to a discussion with Microsoft with regards to a search partnership, not an acquisition. However, he added that Yahoo board members had not opened such a discussion.

In terms of Yahoo s braintrust, which includes both its search algorithms and its audience reaching technology, Microsoft may already have acquired it -- or at least its principal incubator. Dr. Qi Lu was officially appointed Microsoft s new President of Online Services last week. In April 2006, Dr. Lu had been appointed Yahoo s senior vice president for engineering for search technologies.

The WSJ cited people familiar with the matter as saying not only that Yahoo s board has not determined whether to pursue such a deal, but added that Icahn has actually endorsed it. That would contradict Icahn s public comments on CNBC last Wednesday, assuming that Ballmer -- as the WSJ article indicates -- was referring to an acquisition as opposed to a partnership.

But the WSJ s cited quote from Ballmer actually does not refer to an acquisition, just a deal. I think good ideas are usually better done quickly than slowly, so it would probably be better for both of us, and certainly for Yahoo, if we were to do it sooner than later, the quote reads.

The see-saw effect, which may very well be a product of the way the press has appeared to exaggerate comments from both sides of the aisle, makes one ask whether at this point, there actually is anyone familiar with the matter.

Wireless data devices supporting HSPA technology push download speeds to 21Mbps

VANCOUVER, B.C. October 23, 2008 Sierra Wireless NASDAQ: SWIR - TSX: SW is working with mobile broadband industry leaders to almost triple the speed of mobile broadband devices. More than 80 per cent of application performance and availability failures will be blamed on network problems, but the network will actually represent less than 20 per cent of the root cause, said Debra Curtis, Research VP for Gartner. This blame game means that network teams are increasingly dealing with troubleshooting complex applications in addition to traditional network issues. Their expanded role requires tools that can analyse end-to-end application transactions to triage performance problems and determine the root cause, whether that be the network or elsewhere.

Real-Time Performance Monitoring
Observer 13 provides IT teams with a complete view of the network and the applications running over it. ORS enables superior monitoring and troubleshooting in a fraction of the time it takes for more conventional monitoring and analysis tools.

NetLive, a newly released ORS component, provides engineers with high-level network operation centre NOC views of network and application performance in real-time, allowing them to simultaneously monitor current network conditions while pinpointing concerns. Increasingly customers want real-time, in-depth reporting in addition to retrospective analysis to identify causes of latency and application performance issues, explained Douglas Smith, president and co-founder of Network Instruments. ORS provides real-time monitoring and problem resolution. We don t believe there is another analysis company offering the same enterprise-view to packet-level drill-down capability, all seamlessly integrated into a single product set.

ORS also provides auto-base lining of application performance to identify unexpected deviations in application behaviour. In monitoring performance, engineers can drill from the application level down to a specific host server as well as compare day-by-day performance.

Targeting the Financial Sector
Observer 13 also includes components designed to specifically benefit financial organisations. These institutions have particular monitoring requirements that differ greatly from the average company. RNA requires significant processing power to store terabytes of packets to disk and provide immediate analysis, explained Smith. To handle the high processing demands of RNA, we have created a unique file structure optimised for high-speed capture, storage and analysis. Beyond increased performance and reliability, the new operating system eliminates any potential fragmentation issues.

Application Analysis
As web services on the network increase, tracking performance by Internet Protocol IP or virtual IP is no longer adequate. The numbers of devices involved in providing HTTP-based services can make reporting unmanageable. Observer s URL-based performance reporting monitors response times, volumes, utilisation and site-specific statistics. Additionally, response time analysis within ORS now compares response times to expert-defined thresholds, so engineers can easily identify when performance exceeds thresholds.

Ensuring timely access to business-critical application servers is the primary objective of any network engineer, explained Smith. Observer gives network teams enhanced capabilities for tracking response times, handling custom applications and the ability to more easily manage the performance of Web-based services.

Time spent with the fourth and final release candidate of OpenOffice.org for Windows 3.0.0 may finally lead stubborn Microsoft Office users over the great productivity-suite divide.

This reviewer speaks as a user in limbo, fed up with spendy versions of Office and, on the Mac, with all Microsoft software , but harboring bad memories of early versions of the StarOffice productivity suite based on the OpenOffice open-source project -- in short, the user you or a friend might also be.

The 3.0.0 RC 4 version -- available also in Linux, Mac OS X and FreeBSD flavors -- weighs in as a 128 MB download, a possible barrier to convincing new users that this really is a tidier, less system-crushing suite than its major competitors. But installation itself was perfectly smooth. And something subtle and wonderful happened during the process: The install didn t repeatedly demand proofs that the user wasn t some stinking software pirate. Respect? What a concept.

OOo 3.0 s Writer word processor -- for many users the most commonly accessed module of any suite -- feels a great deal like certain older versions of Word. And some of us appreciate that in a word processor; familiar layouts have their charm. Writer continues to lack Word s robust outlining functionality perhaps the most requested addition over the years, but one that developers have repeatedly said would require serious kludges , and the PDF import functionality didn t deliver for us, but the export-to-PDF option worked fast, flawlessly and free.

Other import functions behaved well, in particular the processing for Word 2007 s persnickety .docx documents. All import filters for Office 2007 files worked in our testing; on the Mac side, we understand that Office 2008 formats are supported too.

Impress, the presentation-graphics module, impresses -- though this comes from a reviewer who s felt for some time that PowerPoint was an implement of torture. We noticed an import glitch with a specific .ppt file on our system, but other files imported properly. And the export-to-Flash .swf functionality is just wonderful; two clicks turned our slideshow into a Flash presentation, with formatting translated extremely well. The program has new native support for tables, rather than requiring that tables be embedded Calc objects.

Calc, the spreadsheet program, continues not to be a substitute for a full-fledged database. That s fine; it s a spreadsheet. Database tools are part of OOo but geared mainly toward export to other systems. Still, it s easy to use and provides all the features that most ordinary users want, and OOo 3.0 kicks up the limit on columns from 256 to 1024. But the feature we most hoped to test, multi-user collaboration, will have to wait until more friends and co-workers download and install version 3.

Draw is at long last capable of cropping images in the way that more or less every other drawing package does, quirky technique not being much of a selling point.

Although builds for all operating systems are available now from FileForum , the final version of OpenOffice.org 3.0 is expected to be formally launched next Monday, with appropriate fanfare and a party. If all that hoopla encourages more fence-sitters such as this reviewer to hop over to greener, freer pastures, and encourages the tens of thousands of OOo developers to keep up the good work, it ll be worth the hubbub.

Meru WLAN provides reliable access to get students on line in all subjects

IP08, Earls Court, London, UK Wednesday, 1st October 2008 - Pupils at St Bernard s Catholic High School in Rotherham, Yorkshire can access Internet course materials instantly from any classroom in the building, thanks to a wireless LAN from Meru Networks.

The school wanted to provide reliable access for its 670 students throughout the school, so subject teachers can use Internet resources in any lesson, without having to move the class into a dedicated IT suite. The wireless LAN had to be reliable, and able to support up to 64 laptops at once.

Whole classes of students can access the network at the same time without interruption, said Paul Clark, Strategy leader for ICT at St Bernard s. This network gives more flexible access to our ICT facility, and will allow us to get laptops into all curriculum areas.

UK based Networks by Wireless won a competitive tender, convincing St Bernard s School that wireless LAN equipment from Meru Networks would succeed where other equipment had failed, and provide a network the school could trust.

The school has a new wired LAN, installed this year, and each classroom has a networked PC and an interactive whiteboard. Paul wanted to go further, and give each student network access, but was not convinced wireless LANs were up to the job.

We had tried a wireless LAN before, with a few access points in a small area, but we took it out a year ago, because it was unreliable, said Paul. After this experience, Paul was sceptical that any wireless LAN could meet his school s requirements: We had decided to move away from wireless and get things cabled in.

The demands of pupil access changed that. When a large number of laptops, wheeled to the classroom in a trolley, are handed to students at the beginning of a lesson, wired connections are simply impractical. So the school issued an invitation to network companies, to tender for a reliable wireless LAN that would allow instant access anywhere in the school.

The winner of that tender, Meru s fourth generation single-channel wireless LAN, avoids the unreliability and interference issues common place with legacy wireless LANs. Access points are placed on a single radio channel, eliminating the need for costly channel planning. Meru s coordinated access points ensure bandwidth is shared efficiently, everyone gets the best connection possible, and the network is managed centrally with its award-winning Air Traffic Control technology and System Director software.

Our biggest misgivings were that Meru s single channel architecture was different to every other wireless LAN vendor, said Paul. His technicians evaluated the product, before it was set up by Networks by Wireless.

The network was installed quickly by Networks by Wireless during the school s summer holiday, and was running smoothly before the pupils returned in September. Most vendors equipment requires a detailed site survey to position the radios and avoid interference, but with Meru s single-channel architecture, that wasn t necessary: The wireless part just worked, says Paul. The hardest part of the installation was upgrading the network with Power-over-Ethernet PoE injectors to drive the access points.

The network is future-proof, if the school needs faster network access in future, says Paul: We can upgrade to 802.11n when we need it - but 802.11abg meets our current needs.

Fortify notes that IT research firm Dataquest reports Fortify s revenue led the entire application security testing market, including IBM s dynamic testing product line.

Competition is always good for the industry, but it s the customer that makes the final decision as to which product or service they source, said Barmak Meftah, Fortify s senior vice president of products and technology.

It s therefore worth noting that Fortify s static analyzer covers 17 programming languages, whereas IBM addresses a lot less. In addition, our analyzer can discover more than 315 types of vulnerabilities, whereas IBM uncovers far fewer, he added. Also, Fortify can support seven major IDEs beyond just IBM Eclipse.

According to Meftah, for IT security experts whose job - particularly in these economically challenging times - depends on ensuring that ALL vulnerabilities are revealed, Big Blue s offering might keep some of the hackers out.

But not all of them.

And the ones that get through will probably be the ones that have architected the most complex attack vectors, he noted.

Meftah went on to say that IBM s offering leads with dynamic security analysis via the Watchfire AppScan pen testing capability.

But, he said, effective communication and interaction with developers requires an extensive inside out, code-level knowledge approach compared to the outside in black box capability that Watchfire brings to the IT security table.

It s also worth recognising, he added, that Fortify s offering was built around the language and environment to optimally support developers.

Of course, application vulnerability is what we have specialized in since we were founded in 2003. IBM, in contrast, has produced mainframes, minicomputers, PCs, and software, he said.

'Wave 3' of Windows Live Writer reveals some loose ends

It's the latest test of the one component in Microsoft's online applications arsenal whose code could be leveraged for a more general purpose than blog publishing. Our tests show it lacks a few things Microsoft users would expect.

One of the revised components in Microsoft's latest "Wave 3" test for its Windows Live services is something we've mentioned before here in BetaNews: Windows Live Writer. Its name sounds deceptively like a general purpose word processor -- like the Write utility that comes with Windows -- and you might think that with a little tweaking, it could be.

In fact, one question we had openly considered when Windows Live Writer first emerged on the scene as a brand, was whether Microsoft had an interest in extending the functionality of this particular service to something more general than just publishing blogs on Windows Live Spaces -- for example, a kind of online word processor in the vein of Adobe's Buzzword.

As it turns out, our suspicions may this time have been inaccurate: The "Wave 3" edition of Microsoft's blog editor continues to lack the most basic function you'd expect from a word processor: search and replace. My first thought in testing Live Writer as a blog editor was to see how it would handle material that's appeared in a blog before -- namely, one of BetaNews' own. But that material had embedded HTML tags, which Live Writer would convert into typeset characters -- for example, -- that would appear on the published blog.

The first way you would expect to get rid of such characters is by pasting the whole text first, and editing the tags out next. Of course, you can't do that without global search and replace. Thankfully, in this particular situation, there's an alternative, although it's not in an obvious place: From the Edit menu, select Paste Special then from the dialog box, set the option for HTML and click OK. Now, if you're a veteran of Microsoft Office (and many users of Live apps will be), you'd probably expect Paste Special to mean something else entirely. For the better part of two decades, it's been the way you paste linked or embedded text from a source. Say you're copying cells from a spreadsheet into a Word document; you'd use Paste Special so that the pasted cells are updated when the spreadsheet is updated. There's nothing particularly intuitive about the phrase "Paste Special" that means, in this particular context, "Hey, the buffer might contain HTML tags, so treat them as markups instead of literal characters, please."

Still, that doesn't excuse the absence of search and replace, especially in a program that is at least sophisticated enough to contain a spell checker. You can Find Text from the Edit menu, but that's the extent of Live Writer's location abilities.

The Source tab along the bottom does give you direct access to a blog post's source code. Now, Microsoft has actually learned a lot since the era of FrontPage, so it's good to see that while Live Writer lays out a blog post's contents cleanly, it's also using a minimum of HTML tags, and using the most basic ones. You can paste fancy markup into this area if that's your inclination, but if you were the type of blogger who really needed exclusive markup, you probably wouldn't be using Live Writer anyway.

The smoothest part of Live Writer we've used thus far is the picture handling. You shouldn't try drag-and-drop, though after you click the Insert Picture link from the right pane, the process is very familiar and straightforward. Pictures that are obviously too big for the space where you're inserting them, are automatically scaled down to a reasonable scale -- what appears to us to be about 50% of the column width of the full layout. That's something Microsoft Word doesn't do; it doesn't assume you probably want a huge image to be printed smaller than the width of the page, making you size it down instead.

The properties pane for inserted pictures is straightforward, and in our test, changes made there were reflected on-screen quite quickly. So there's obviously some thought given to reducing steps and making some processes more intuitive, in Live Writer.

Perhaps the one bar you'd expect Live Writer to clear handily, though, is the need to extend the "experience" above and beyond what the Windows Live Spaces user already has available. The default blog post entry page in Live Spaces doesn't look like much at first, but it actually contains a lot of functionality that's mirrored in Live Writer. You can insert stored text and images pretty much the same way, your formatting tools are fairly similar, and you can directly access the source code.

What exactly does Live Writer give you, then, that's over and above what Microsoft offers everyone online? Depending on the user's bandwidth, Live Writer is probably a little faster. But it's not exactly an "online application" any more, especially with its direct dependence on Windows-based libraries such as DirectX -- dependencies that, of course, take "Wave 3" out of the realm of possibilities for Mac OS and Linux users.

Live Writer is an interesting test of Microsoft trying to do something on a small scale, in a big way. We'll keep our eyes on it, but for now, it has a ways to go.

Despite what has become international opposition to the deal , Eric Schmidt yesterday expressed his belief that Google doesn't have to receive special governmental approval to proceed with its ad-sharing arrangement with Yahoo.

In a press conference at Google's headquarters yesterday, CEO Eric Schmidt said the deal is scheduled to be completed in October, but he can't seem to get a bead on where regulators stand.

"We don't know if they think it's a good deal or poor deal," the Associated Press quoted Schmidt as saying. He was confident that the deal does not represent any anti-competitive action.

However, the scope of the combination has been grounds for concern since it was proposed. Civil rights organizations , and agricultural interest groups are among those lobbying against the deal.

"There is a natural fear of things getting larger," he told reporters, adding that Google failed to effectively convey to regulators how beneficial the combination could actually be.

Schmidt did not leave Microsoft unchecked, either, in his response to a question about rivals and trade groups attempting to block the combination. "We are quite certain that Microsoft is busy helping everyone get upset about these things," Reuters cites Schmidt as saying.
